Using vanity nameservers
Setting glue records
If you choose to use vanity nameservers, you need to ensure that your domain registrar supports glue records. These might use different names such as personal nameservers or similar.
Decide on what subdomains you plan to use for your nameservers. Some suggestions are :
- inheriting the subdomains used internally
- using the ICAO airport codes for each location
The names are not important so long as you set the glue records to the IPv4 and IPv6 of whichever nameservers you are using. You can view a list of nameservers on the main page of this section.
Updating your zonefile
Before changing your nameservers with your registrar, you need to update your zonefile, specifically the NS
and SOA
records. Update your NS
records to point to your new vanity nameservers. Update the SOA
record replacing loon.birb.fr
to whichever vanity nameserver you use that points to loon
.
You should not change the "domain" matt.birb.fr
— this part of the SOA
record is called the RNAME
and is actually an e-mail address for contacting the DNS host. Unless you want to receive these emails yourself, it is ideal to leave it as is.
Updating your nameservers
The steps to changing your nameservers varies between registrars, but it is important to ensure your glue records are set and that, regardless of the order, that you ensure the first in the list points to loon
